As Mumbai goes to poll in the Phase 5 of Lok Sabha Election 2024, our Senior Correspondent Priyanka Tupe visited Dharavi that falls under Mumbai’s South Central Lok Sabha Constituency to speak to the women living here about their issues and their expectations with the elections.

In this latest episode of #BehanboxChaupal, local women politicians, activists and residents of Dharavi share their thoughts on Dharavi Redevelopment plan and the ways in which it will impact their lives.

The Union and Maharashtra State government have promised to make Dharavi a developed industrial hub as it is home to numerous small-scale industries and its proximity to Mumbai airport and business hubs. The residents will be moved to new buildings on a portion of allotted railway land. Currently, a survey is underway in Dharavi to identify eligible residents. The Congress has accused the BJP of “sponsoring” Gautam Adani’s Dharavi Land Development plan and Uddhav Thackeray has alleged that the project has been handed to the Adani group under favourable terms. ‘Dharavi Bachao Andolan’ is protesting against Adani.

MGNREGS is the world's largest employment guarantee program that aims to guarantee the ‘right to work’ and is meant to benefit the marginalized rural households reeling under distress.

To investigate the ground reality and implementation of the scheme, especially for women, our reporter Priyanka Tupe traveled to eight villages in Amravati, Akola, and Yavatmal districts of Maharashtra. She found that none of them had ongoing work schemes under MGNREGS.

We learned that availability of work depends on the caste location. Pardhi, Phase-Pardhi, and Dhangar communities tend to be excluded from the scheme which forces them to migrate. All the Pardhi households of Titva Beda village in Akola migrate to Odisha and West Bengal in search of livelihood every year.
